Design Collaborative Wins Excellence In Construction Award
We recently won a Michiana Builders Association Excellence in Construction Award for Indiana University-South Bend's Northside Hall Renovation! This project is Phase I of a multi-year restoration.
Northside Hall is an important anchor for Indiana University-South Bend's campus. The structure is not only the largest classroom and lab building on university grounds, but it also houses the campus bookstore and fine arts performance spaces. Phase I is the first of several renovation phases focused on the 1958 portion of the building, a notable example of modernist architecture with strong rectilinear forms and several expansive glass openings.
The primary renovation objectives were to restore and revitalize the exterior building envelope and upgrade life safety systems throughout the building. The overall scope of work included roof system replacement, lightning protection installation, limestone restoration, aluminum window and curtain wall replacement, architectural metal restoration, theatrical rigging improvements, fire alarm upgrades, and miscellaneous interior and mechanical upgrades.
While the building is not registered as a historic structure, care was taken to ensure that the architectural character of the building was maintained. Renovation details and replacement systems were designed to ensure the integrity of the building envelope for the next 30-plus years.
