Project Spotlight: Shindigz

“There's a party goin' on right here! A celebration to last throughout the years!”

Shindigz, a national online retailer of party supplies, decided to move their operations team from rural South Whitley, IN, to downtown Fort Wayne. They purchased a historic building at the center of downtown development and asked DC to help them transform it. A main goal with their new space was to attract and retain talented individuals as Shindigz grows and changes. To do this, they wanted to create an exciting space where their team could better collaborate. They also saw that being a part of the growing downtown Fort Wayne community would be a great asset.

Much of the transformation involved celebrating the history and existing features of the building.  Shindigz wanted to create the vibe of a “93-year-old startup company.” The concrete structure and brick walls were exposed on the interior. The large and abundant windows were opened, and interior walls were minimized. This allowed natural light to penetrate the space and gave their entire team access to views of the surrounding area.

In Shindigz’s previous location, their departments were very separated. The new space brings the team together in an open environment with lots of collaboration and community areas. Shindigz also made the decision to not have any private offices. Instead smaller privacy booths are provided for privacy on-demand when increased focus or privacy are necessary.

The neutral color palette compliments the existing building materials and lets their people and products shine. Wood and metal ceiling and furniture pieces were commissioned to add another element of uniqueness and warmth. A large, hand-painted mural in the community hub celebrates the company’s motto “Where Fun Comes to Party.” Film on the glass fronts of all conference rooms features song lyrics from Kool & the Gang’s Celebration, a nod to what Shindigz provides – a celebration, or a party.

The new space will position Shindigz to better attract new talent. Workplace design trends feature more collaborative and interactive environments with more shared space and less owned space. Work spaces are created based on the functional needs of the job role and less to establish hierarchy. Shindigz’s new space aligns with these trends. Their location in the center of downtown makes all the community an extension of their workplace. Local restaurants and attractions not only provide the team with places to engage before and after work, but are also just as likely to become a conference room for a coordination meeting. The growing number of downtown developments in urban Fort Wayne give their team access to living space within walking distance of work.

“So, bring your good times, and your laughter, too. We gonna celebrate your party with you.” Welcome to downtown Fort Wayne, Shindigz!
